Web of Science

The library recently offered training on our new database, Web of Science. Some interesting info gleaned from the 2 sessions:
  • New data is loaded into the database every Thurs. night so if you've created an 'alert' to be notified when a specific article is cited, it will be sent to you Fri.
  • 99.5% of the journals indexed are peer-reviewed; the .5% that are technically not may as well be because of their high editorial standards (e.g. Science & Nature)
  • Thomson is always reviewing the journals indexed in Web of Science and does add new ones or occasionally drop ones. They welcome your suggestions. Just contact their Technical Support.
  • The database doesn't index preprints. Another database of theirs, Current Contents Select, does, but we do not subscribe to it. However, Scirus, a free database on our website, does index preprints.

Attendees received a 48-page workbook which you can download online for free at http://scientific.thomson.com/media/scpdf/wos_workbook_7_6.pdf .

You might want to check out the online tutorials (animated with sound) on how to use the db in depth or refer your students to them:
http://www.scientific.thomson.com/support/recordedtraining/wos . Running time for these is about 3-10 minutes each.

Lastly, you might want to use parts of another workbook with your students to explain citation indexing (found at http://scientific.thomson.com/media/scpdf/lis_sem_0704.pdf) . It's got lots of useful graphics like the following:

If you have any questions, feel free to call or email me, or just drop by my office (AL 222).

Library instruction

If your students need to do library research to complete an assignment, you might want to consider having them first attend a library instruction session. Library instruction is most effective when it's tailored to fit a specific assignment. Following is a list of some potential topics with estimated presentation times:
  • Developing a search topic -- how to browse the literature (10-15 min.)
  • Developing a specific search strategy -- coming up with key words that work (15-20 min.)
  • Matching a search topic to the best information sources -- considering format (books, gov docs, periodicals) and treatment (scholarly, trade, or popular) (5-10 min.)
  • Identifying the best databases to locate those information sources (5-10 min.)
  • Using the general interest databases, i.e., interdisciplinary (10 min. per database)
  • Using the specialized databases, i.e., subject or discipline-specific (10-15 min. per database)
  • Finding the full-text or paper version of an article (10-15 min.)
  • Getting materials not owned by the library via interlibrary loan (5 min.)
  • Citing your sources using a specific style (5-10 min.)

I've used a variety of approaches, including working with the professor to develop an in-class assignment for hands-on practice. Call or email me to discuss ideas to facilitate your students' library research.

New academic search engine from Microsoft

Microsoft announced the beta launch of its new search engine, Windows Live Academic Search, Tuesday, April 11. The search service will initially target the subjects of computer science, electrical engineering and physics, but more subjects will be added over time.

WLAS is a cooperative effort between Windows Live Search, industry association CrossRef and more than 10 leading publishers including the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), and leading publishers Elsevier and John Wiley & Sons Inc. Also involved are the Taylor & Francis Group, the American Institute of Physics, the American Physical Society, the Institute of Physics, Ex Libris Group, TDNet, Blackwell Publishing, Nature Publishing Group, the British Library and OCLC Online Computer Library Center (OCLC).

Unlike Google Scholar , WLAS does provide information on what is being searched. Look for more content to be added over time. Since we currently subscribe to many of the publications/ databases indexed, the Library will investigate linking to it as a resource.

To read a more critical evaluation of WLAS, click here.

Copyright and electronic reserves

If you'd like to 'brush up' your knowledge of copyright, I can recommend a helpful, online (free) primer on copyright issues just published by the American Association of University Presses and some other professional organizations. They've also compiled a helpful web site, Copyright Resources, with links to basic copyright info, online copyright tutorials, copyright websites and articles, and intellectual property info (copyright, trademark, and patent).

Copyright can be a concern when it comes to reserve readings. However, did you know that you can use articles from many of our electronic databases, linking to them either through our Course Reserve module in our catalog, PILOT, or through BlackBoard, for your reserve readings? Linking to our databases for electronic reserves is fast and easy, and it obviates the need to get permission from the publisher since the Library has paid for access. (We're linking, not making a copy.)

Contact Lori Osborne, Reserves Coordinator, x4220, losborne@bloomu.edu, or me for more information or assistance.

Top jobs in America

The Chronicle of Higher Ed's Wired Campus blog reported a story in Money magazine on the top jobs in America. I noted that many of the top 50 jobs are those for which a student could prepare with a BU degree (following the job title is the 10-year projected job growth and the average pay):

1 Software engineer 46.07% $80,427
7 Computer/IT analyst 36.10% $83,427
13 Technical writer 23.22% $57,841
15 Medical scientist 34.06% $70,053
16 Physical scientist 12.18% $80,213
35 Biotechnology research scientist 17.05% $66,393
36 Urban planner 15.17% $60,891
38 Speech-language pathologist 14.57% $58,329
41 Biological scientist 17.03% $61,317
45 Environmental scientist 17.11% $59,027
46 Lab technologist 20.53% $51,502
47 Registered nurse 29.35% $68,872

New databases

This semester has seen the addition of quite a few new databases to the Library's web pages, thanks to Performance Funding money. Those of possible interest to the sciences/health sciences departments include (arranged by broad subject):

INTERDISCIPLINARY (under 'General')
Web of Science - (also listed under 'Sciences' as Sci Cit Index) - provides access to ISI's Science Citation Index Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index. SCI indexes 6400+ major journals across 71 disciplines, and SSCI covers 1800+ social sciences journals spanning 54 disciplines.

Wiley Interscience - provides access to over 200 full-text journals in science and technology-related fields, business, and some social sciences. Also provides abstracts to additional journals, books, and other materials. If prompted for user name and password, we do not have access.

AccuNet/AP Multimedia Archive - AP photos, graphics (maps, charts, graphs, logos, etc.), and 4600+ hours of audio clips (1920 - present). BU students and faculty may freely use contents for educational purposes only.

College Blue Book - ebook containing detailed information on colleges & universities in the U.S. & Canada; useful for students considering grad school.

COMPUTER SCIENCE (Listed under 'Sciences' databases)
IEEE Computer Society Digital Library - provides access to full-text journals, transactions, and conference proceedings of the IEEE.

[*One more database, ACM Digital Library, will be added sometime in May or June to the Sciences list.]

BIOLOGY (under 'Sciences')
BioOne - access to over 80 full-text, academic journals published by American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS) member societies and other related organizations.

HEALTH/MEDICINE
Journals(at)Ovid - full-text for 25 health care journals and searchable abstracts for more than 2,000 health science & science journals. To limit to full-text, check "Ovid Full Text Available" near bottom of search screen.

ADDITIONAL INTEREST
ValueLine Investment Survey - online access to info on over 1300 companies. Check out your investments or potential investments.
